Decoding the Mystery: Multi-Level Marketing Explained

February 4, 2024 by Toni Coleman-Brown Leave a Comment

Today, we’ll have multi-level marketing explained in a straightforward and comprehensive manner. As you know, the world of business is vast and varied, offering a plethora of strategies and models to achieve success. One such approach that often generates curiosity and controversy is multi-level marketing (MLM). If you’ve ever found yourself intrigued but slightly confused by this concept, you’re in the right place.

Multi-Level Marketing Explained

Multi-Level Marketing, often referred to as network marketing or referral marketing, operates on a unique business model where the compensation structure is two-fold. Firstly, distributors earn profits from the products they sell directly to customers. Additionally, they are rewarded for the sales made by other distributors they have recruited to the company, creating multiple tiers of compensation. These recruits, known as participants or the distributor’s downline, are also incentivized to bring more people into the fold, further broadening the marketing network.

Interestingly, the products or services promoted by MLM companies are typically not available in standard brick-and-mortar stores. This necessitates the role of the MLM distributors, also known as associates, who have the task of directly selling these products to consumers.

Multi-Level Marketing thrives on the concept of direct selling. This strategy eliminates the need for physical retail outlets, leading to a significant reduction in overhead costs. Furthermore, it grants distributors the flexibility to work from any location they prefer, making it an attractive choice for individuals seeking an alternative to traditional employment.

It’s crucial to note that while MLM involves recruiting other distributors, it is the combination of sales from products or services and new recruitments that shape the business model. The emphasis on both aspects is what differentiates a legitimate MLM operation from an illegal pyramid scheme. Thus, as the distributor network expands and sales increase, the pyramid of compensation continues to grow, providing potential income at multiple levels.

Multi-Level Marketing vs. Traditional Business Models

In the conventional business sphere, the path a product takes from creation to consumer involves several steps. The manufacturing company is responsible for producing the product, after which it is dispatched to various retail stores. These outlets act as the interface for selling the products to the end consumers. Simultaneously, the responsibility for marketing and advertising the product usually falls upon the manufacturing company itself, or a professional marketing firm they employ.

Contrastingly, MLM structures dismantle this conventional pathway. In an MLM business model, distributors or associates become the driving force for both marketing and sales. They undertake the promotion and selling of products and have the added responsibility of recruiting and training new distributors. This dual role blurs the line between marketing and sales, creating a unique business dynamic.

Further, MLM’s foundation on direct selling principles carves out the necessity for physical retail outlets. This is a significant departure from traditional business models where brick-and-mortar stores play a pivotal role in sales. By eliminating the need for these physical stores, MLMs are able to significantly lower overhead costs. In turn, this cost-effectiveness can translate into potentially higher profits for distributors.

Additionally, this business model allows distributors to operate with increased flexibility. Unlike traditional businesses, which often require employees to be present in a physical location, MLM gives distributors the freedom to work from their preferred location. Whether it’s their home, a coffee shop, or a beachside retreat, MLM distributors are not tied down by a specific workspace. This adaptability, coupled with the potential for earning passive income, makes MLM a compelling business model for those seeking alternatives to traditional employment.

In essence, while both MLM and traditional business models aim to deliver products to consumers, they do so through markedly different paths. From the role of distributors to the elimination of physical retail outlets, MLM structures redefine the journey of a product from manufacturing to consumer.

Is Multi-Level Marketing a Pyramid Scheme?

One of the common questions concerning MLM is whether it equates to a pyramid scheme. While it’s understandable why some might mistake one for the other due to their pyramid-like structures, there are crucial differences to note. Pyramid schemes, first and foremost, are illegal activities that rely predominantly on recruitment for revenue generation. These schemes do not offer a tangible product or service for sale and function purely on bringing more participants into the scheme. Their illegitimacy stems from the fact that their sustainability is impossible, as they invariably collapse once there are no more people to enroll.

Multi-Level Marketing, however, follows a legitimate business model that underscores both product sales and recruitment. In MLM, the revenue stream isn’t confined to the recruitment of new distributors but is also strongly tied to the sale of actual products or services to consumers. While recruitment is incentivized, the primary emphasis remains on product sales, creating a balanced model that allows for sustainable growth. MLM companies are subject to stringent regulations and guidelines to operate within the legal framework and avoid crossing into pyramid scheme territory.

That said, it’s essential to clarify that not all MLM companies adhere strictly to these ethical guidelines. There have been instances where companies have leaned heavily on recruitment over product sales, blurring the lines between MLM and pyramid schemes. These outliers should not be taken as representative of the entire MLM industry but serve as a reminder to approach MLM with a discerning eye and thorough research.

The Legality and Ethics of Multi-Level Marketing

Multi-level marketing operates within a lawful framework and is overseen by regulatory bodies such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). These agencies enforce regulations to ensure that MLM companies maintain a balanced focus on both product sales and recruitment. Misleading income claims and overemphasis on recruitment are red flags that agencies such as the FTC monitor to prevent MLM companies from crossing into the realm of illegal pyramid schemes.

However, the ethical perspective of MLM is more complex and can often be a subject of debate. While the business model itself is lawful, some practices within the industry have raised ethical questions. For instance, companies that put excessive pressure on their distributors to buy more products than they can feasibly sell or that emphasize recruitment over actual product sales may be operating on the fringe of ethical business conduct.

These dubious practices can result in financial strain for distributors and potentially damage the company’s reputation. It’s important for anyone considering becoming a distributor to be aware of these potential pitfalls and to carefully evaluate the company’s sales and recruitment strategies.

The ethical operation of MLM businesses, like any other industry, largely depends on adherence to best practices, transparency, and the prioritization of distributor well-being over financial gain. In other words, a company that treats its distributors fairly, offers genuine products or services, and upholds a balanced emphasis on sales and recruitment is more likely to be considered ethical. Conversely, those companies prioritizing recruitment over product sales, thus closely resembling pyramid schemes, often find themselves embroiled in controversy and legal battles.

Therefore, it’s crucial for MLM companies to not only adhere to legal regulations but to maintain a firm commitment to ethical standards as well. This adherence can protect the company and its distributors from potential legal complications and ensure its longevity and success in the competitive world of MLM.

The Bottom Line: Is Multi-Level Marketing Worth It?

Deciding if multi-level marketing is the right path for you ultimately boils down to your personal ambitions, abilities, and dedication. It’s paramount to thoroughly investigate any MLM company you’re considering joining. Take the time to fully comprehend the compensation structure, scrutinize the products being sold, and realistically assess the amount of time and energy you’re willing to invest.

There are numerous testimonials of individuals who have tasted great success in MLM, appreciating the work flexibility it provides and the allure of earning residual income. However, it’s worth noting that some people find it strenuous to reap substantial profits due to the intricacies of the compensation plan. It’s vital to venture into MLM with a clear mindset, understanding that it’s not a fast track to wealth accumulation.

It’s also critical to be aware of the ethical considerations discussed previously. Aligning yourself with an MLM company that prioritizes fair treatment of its distributors, sells authentic products or services, and emphasizes sales as much as recruitment is likely to offer a more favorable experience.

As with any business endeavor, success in MLM is not guaranteed. It requires significant effort, dedication, and a flair for sales and recruitment. If you have an entrepreneurial spirit, enjoy networking, and are captivated by the idea of earning income from your personal sales and those of your recruitments, MLM might be a path worth exploring. But remember, as in all business ventures, informed decisions backed by thorough research pave the way for success.

In conclusion, whether or not MLM is worth it is a deeply personal decision influenced by your individual goals, talents, and resilience. But armed with a comprehensive understanding of the MLM model and a clear-eyed assessment of its benefits and challenges, you’re well-equipped to make an informed choice.

Network Marketing is Not a Pyramid Scheme

January 6, 2014 by Toni Coleman-Brown Leave a Comment

The network marketing industry is not made up of pyramid schemes.  People often believe that the person on top will always be on top and that no one can rise above that person or team.  This is simply not true.  Time and time again, new people are signing up for network marketing organizations and blowing past current leaders, and as I type this sentence, someone is getting blown past right now.

Corporate America is the real pyramid scheme

Nevertheless, people continue to perpetuate this myth.  If anyone took time to do some analysis, they discover that Corporate America America, as well as the United States government are set up like pyramids.  When you look at the organizational structure of most corporations, you find at the top a CEO/President and maybe some Sr Vice Presidents under them and some Vice Presidents under them and then some Sr. Directors under them and then Directors, Managers, etc.  And what you might notice is that the closer you get to the top the smaller the number and the closer you get to the bottom, you will find more people.  Hmmm!!!  Sounds like the shape of a pyramid to me.

The most ironic thing about this structure is that when you’re hired by a Corporation, you’re not hired as the President in most cases.  Quite frankly in most cases you’re hired at the bottom of the pyramid and you’re expected to work your way to the top.  But how possible is that when the people at the top are constantly fighting to maintain their positions of power and prestige?  How long do you think it would take you to get to the top of your corporation?  If you answered a long time, you’re probably right.

Unlike Corporate America, network marketing is the only opportunity that allows you to start at the top.  You can get started with most Direct Sales companies for less than $500.00.  Where else can you start up a business or franchise with such a small investment and then turn around and work your way to millionaire status?  Only in network marketing can you do such a thing and that is the beauty of this industry.  In network marketing the playing field is level.  The industry doesn’t care if you’re black, white, fat or tall or skinny.  All this industry cares about is your passion and desire for success.  When you embrace a network marketing opportunity with an open mind and a willingness to be coached, you will be transformed.

Not Making Money in MLM?

March 13, 2013 by Toni Coleman-Brown Leave a Comment

If you’re not making money in MLM then maybe you should consider this:

  1.  Maybe it’s time to change companies
  2. Maybe it’s time to for you to change. Period.

The MLM industry is probably one of the most exhilarating and exhausting industries in the world.  What makes it difficult is the fact that you have to deal with so many different people.  What makes if fun and exciting is the fact that you get leverage.  There are not too many business around that promotes the fact that you can earn money while you sleep or while you lay in the sun at the beach.  But this is exactly what you can do when you join an MLM company.

The biggest complaint that I hear from most people is the fact that they’re just not making money in MLM.  And in some cases they may very need to re-consider the mlm company that they decided to join.  Some companies compensations plans are so horrible that the reps end up having to work like a Hebrew slave in order to make a few hundred dollars.  This is especially true in party plan companies.

Party plan companies are great, because they allow you to put right now money in your pocket, but what happens when you host a party and you don’t generate any sales.  You end up expending a lot of time and money on activities that leave you with empty pockets.  If this happens to you a lot, then it is seriously time for you to re-consider the company and the products or maybe it’s time for you to change.

Not Making Money in MLM can be solved through training.

Training is the key to making money in any business whether it’s in the mlm industry or not.  You must learn to be that type of person that’s not happy unless you’re learning something new.  “Jim Rohn once said that “a formal education will earn you a living, but self education will earn you a fortune.”  And he was so right.  And to add the icing on the cake everyone knows that it’s not just the knowledge that gives you the power, it’s what you do with the knowledge or how you apply it that really gives you the power.

If you can connect with the right people who have the right information that could help you along he way, then you can and will have success.  If you sit at the feet of the right leaders and practice what you’ve learned, a strange thing will happen, you will begin to change.  It’s called personal growth and once you begin to grow so will your income.

You know that no matter how many times Donald Trump loses money, he will always turn around and make more money.  That’s because success is built upon many failures.  Some people call it failing forward.  And that’s a good thing because you’re moving in the right direction no matter how many times you fall.

So, if you’re not making money in mlm then you need to surround yourself with the right people and the right information to get yourself on the right track.  And before you know it, success will be yours.

With your success in mind,

Toni Coleman Brown

Five Love Languages for Network Marketers

August 14, 2012 by Toni Coleman-Brown 1 Comment

Imagine what it would be like if you gave birth to a brand new baby and never held it, never kissed it, or never showed it any love? It is a proven fact that if you did that to a newborn, it would certainly die.

Well the same thing holds true for Network Marketers that we recruit onto our teams, if we don’t show them love, they eventually will either die off or quit immediately.

With that being said, what is the best way for you to demonstrate compassion for your team members?

Dr. Gary Chapman has written several books on the Five Love Languages. He has versions available for couples, singles, teens and children. For the purpose of what we do in our industry, I’ve outlined what I consider to be the Five Love Languages for Network Marketers, which will help you to nurture and develop your team and they are as follows:

#1 – Communication
Communication is such an important part of showing your team members that you care and to your customers to know that you want to help give what they need so a customer service training will be done for every company. Recent upgrades in technology, has made it is easy for anyone to send a simple e-mail or e-card to team members letting them know that you appreciate them, or acknowledging something great that they’ve recently done. However, I must say that taking the time to hand write a simple note of praise and sending it in the mail is one of the best ways you can communicate. Your team members will feel even more appreciated. Learn how your employees can stay connected post-pandemic as explained here.

In this day and age, when so many people are boasting about building teams without picking up the phone, I encourage you to do just the opposite. Calling your team member shows them that they mean more to you than just a dollar sign or a number on your genealogy, and it demonstrates that you’re sincerely interested in building a relationship.

Network Marketers Need Recognition

#2 – Recognition
People become a part of network marketing companies because of the recognition and financial rewards. This is a well known fact. Corporate America has gotten away from recognizing their employees for a job well done, and as a result of this, the average person is starving for this type of public showing of appreciation.
Simple acts of recognition not only helps to make a team member feel good, but it goes straight to the bottom line of your business because in network marketing, what gets recognized, gets done.
Therefore, if you recognize the top in sales, then you will have increases in sales and the same holds true for recruiting. If you are a business owner, you can get them a personalised visiting card printed by Printing Services in Houston Texas to show them that their work towards the company is not just noted but also appreciated.

But let’s face it, people need to be stroked. And at the end of the day, there is a little kid in all of us that still gets excited when we receive a gold star. So we must make sure to give out plenty of gold stars.

#3 – Gifts
People love to receive gifts. Giving them is one of the strongest ways to increase retention on your team. Certainly, in an industry with an attrition rate of over 90%, you will want to do everything that you can to reduce that statistic. Also, remember birthdays and anniversaries and send little gifts on these special occasions as well. It acknowledges that your relationship extends outside the realms of just business. Building solid relationships creates loyalty amongst the team that could potentially last forever.

You should also invest in corporate uniform so that they can display a professional appearance to your customers and they can feel more personally invested in the business.

#4 – Servant Leadership
Servant leadership is all about meeting the needs of the people that you lead. A servant leader is one who devotes him or herself to serving their team. Acts of service can range anywhere from being available to assist your team with their events and meetings, or assisting them with closing new business partners, or even being available for them in a time of need.
One of my favorite authors, Marian Wright Edelman, says that “Service Is the Rent You Pay for Living” and I believe that.

#5 – Spending Time Together as a Team
There is nothing that beats the bonding experience of coming together as a team. Gathering your team members for social occasions such as bowling events, pizza parties or team retreats is the perfect way for everyone to get to know each other. This allows your team members to see everyone in a relaxed environment and they get to know another side of each other as well. Life long and life changing friendships are developed in these types of settings.

Network Marketers Come in All Types

Here’s the bottom line, after years of working my network marketing business, I’ve learned that it will attract all kinds of people, with different personality types. These personalities will merge together forming a melting pot of opinions and ideals, which will define the culture of your team. You must understand and appreciate each personality for everything that they have to offer because it takes all types to make a team.

As a team leader in the MLM industry, your role is to show love and concern and build relationships.

So, STOP and ask yourself these key questions, how could you not have an affinity for the people that are helping you to achieve your goals and live your dreams? How could you not appreciate those people that work with you and help you even when they don’t have to?

When you are abundantly blessed, it is your duty to be a blessing to others and what a better way to be a blessing than to demonstrate love to our teams.

Doing so gets to the core of our cause as MLM Leaders, which is literally to change lives. Loving your team is not just something that is nice to do. It is something that you must do in order to have long-term success.

An Unbiased Review of My Lead System Pro

August 13, 2012 by Toni Coleman-Brown Leave a Comment

MLM Lead System Pro (MLSP) is a branded attraction marketing system that allows a representative from any MLM company to launch their lead generation marketing efforts on the Internet.  The system touts the ability to be able to brand yourself online, and while that is true, many of the landing page templates that are included in the system, does everything but brand you.  However, you do have the ability to upload your own videos and change the content of these lead capture pages to focus on you and what you have to offer, but it just takes a little time to understand that and some camera-shy folks may run from that.

MLSP does a good job of promoting the fact that it is a branded online marketing system, but what it doesn’t do a good job in promoting is the top-notch training that comes with the program.  The MLSP back office packs millions of dollars worth of training and is such a value for only $149 per month.  On top of that, Monday through Friday, they offer a daily training call at 11:00am EST that is fully-loaded with MLM training tips that anyone looking to get to the next level in their MLM would benefit from hearing.

For someone on the outside looking in with limited MLM internet marketing experience, they may not immediately “get” what this system has to offer.  It starts out with the promotion of the “Conquer The Internet” DVD, which reveals how average, everyday people are achieving the success they deserve in their MLM companies by leveraging the Internet. The DVD also reveals how top MLM reps are sponsoring people in their business on autopilot and how they can still make money even when people say no to their deal.

All of that is possible because MLSP is also an affiliate program, which pays out a monthly referral bonus to all the individuals that you personally sponsor to the system.  It is a classic funded proposal, as once a person is inside of the system they have the ability to market their particular MLM to the people that they refer to MLSP.

People might come to the system for the marketing system, but they will most likely STAY with the system because of the training.  Norbitt and Brian Fanale has done a great job with creating a unique hub of training for anyone in the industry.  And if a person gets lost on the outside of the system, they will certainly find their way once they’re inside of it.  It is there that you will find years worth of training in the archives and specialized killer internet marketing training strategies in the War Chest.

Tips for using My Lead System Pro

I offer the following tips for anyone deciding to use the MLM Leads System Pro:

  1. Take your time and go through each video on the set up process.  While it doesn’t take long to go through it all and many of the videos are only five minutes long you do have some things to think about, like what you will call your domain, and which auto-responder system you will choose.
  2. Choose a domain that will attract MLMer’s.  This is who your target market is for the system, people who are already in an MLM or Network Marketing company.  Therefore, it just makes since to pick a domain that has MLM or Network Marketing in it for search engine optimization.
  3. Take advantage of Tracey Walker’s Be Blog Savvy system.  She explains step-by-step what you need to do to create a kick-butt blog.
  4. Also take advantage of Mike Dillard’s What’s Working Now to keep you up-to-date on mlm online marketing strategies.
  5. Be patient with yourself.  Even for a seasoned internet marketer, learning new internet techniques takes time.
  6. Lastly, but most importantly, pick one online marketing strategy and see it through to the end before you try something new.  For example, if you decide to do article marketing.  Do that!  Get good at it and make it work before moving on to something else like pay-per-click.

So that’s my story and I am sticking to it.  MLM Lead System Pro really is a good online marketing system for network marketers.  The founders did a fantastic job in putting it together, they just have not yet figured out how to make someone on the outside looking in, fully understand the power of what’s inside.  Once that little issue is figured out, I do believe that they will have something that all network marketers will come to understand that they need and deserve to have as a part of their success strategy.

Shorten Your Network Marketing Success Curve with MLM Leads!

August 11, 2012 by Toni Coleman-Brown Leave a Comment

Having a consistent number of network marketing leads to talk to each and every day is the number one key to success in your business. Hands down! There is a saying that we use in our business that goes, “If You Want the Loot, You Must Recruit!” And that’s a fact. Having good quality leads to talk to will explode your business and all successful networkers focus on lead generation.

The best online lead generation program that I’ve ever found was MLM Lead System Pro. Why? Because it teaches you how to generically find and sponsor your own leads. You’ve heard the saying before…”Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, but teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime” that’s what MLM Lead System Pro is all about. It is all about teaching a man how to fish. While buying leads from a leads program can help you explode your business, there is nothing like the quality of finding your own leads that are excited and motivated about working with Y-O-U!

Top Network Marketing Professionals spend 80% of their time working with MLM Leads

When they work with network marketing leads, there are a few key factors that leaders understand and acknowledge.

1. Leaders understand the importance of investing in their success. So they don’t mind spending money learning a new way to find leads.
2. MLM Professionals will develop and spend time learning and understanding the ratios. They know that the more people they talk to the better they will get at closing. They know that they need to talk to a lot of people.
3. Leaders in the industry focus on systems versus themselves. Leaders know that systems like MLM Lead System Pro will help get the leads they need to succeed.
4. Leaders will also follow-up until they get a firm YES or NO. They don’t settle for wishy washy answers or responses. They will ask the right questions to get the right answers and uncover their prospects “hot spot”.
5. MLM Professionals know that it’s about sorting rather than trying to persuade someone to do what you want them to do.
6. Leaders will also promote lead systems like MLM Lead System Pro to show their team members how to generate another source of income through affiliate income.
7. Leaders also understand that the race is not won by the swift, but by the one that endures it through until the end.

Establish a Daily Method of Operaiton for Generating MLM Leads

At the end of the day everyone has to decide their own DMO (Daily Method of Operation). If you want to buy mlm leads or if you want to generate your own, you will have to make that choice and stick it through. But don’t pine over the decision, just make a choice and get to work.

This industry certainly has a way of showing you who you really are and what you’re made of, however, success can be obtained if you just get to work and don’t quit. Quitters never win and winners never quit.  And that’s a fact.
